BPL for Smart Communication

For over 30 years, we have been observing the dynamic development of the TCP/IP backbone network in LV and HV transmission and distribution networks using fiber optic lines. Currently, virtually every HV substation with a MV switchboard (so-called GPZ) has an interface to the TCP/IP backbone. It seems that a natural continuation of the expansion of the TCP/IP backbone for LV and HV power networks would be to extend the backbone to the MV and LV networks. This can be achieved using BPL technology (Broadband Powerline Communication – broadband, fast TCP/IP communication in medium and low voltage networks).

The ability to use BPL's broadband communication technology, 100% compliant with the TCP/IP standard, allows for the flexible and seamless connection of various TCP/IP-compliant communication systems within the power grid. BPL offers an ideal solution for the implementation of Smart Metering systems and Smart Grids. The standard makes connecting different communication systems within a single power grid flexible and trouble-free.   []

Main features of the BPL system

  • Fast and stable
    The maximum data transfer rate of 200 Mbps on low-voltage (230/400V) and medium-voltage (1 to 36kV) power grid lines allows for significantly higher data throughput (approximately 1000 times faster) compared to narrowband transmission systems – bidirectional and in real time. Simultaneous transmission from multiple measurement points is possible simultaneously.
  • Open and scalable
    TCP/IP-based communication, along with the ability to use open interfaces, regardless of the manufacturer of the measurement or communication devices.
  • Flexible integration
    The numerous interfaces that BPL devices are equipped with, such as an interface to a narrowband PLC, as well as radio interfaces such as wireless M-Bus, RF, or Zigbee, enable the quick configuration of extensive Smart Grid networks.
  • Efficient
    Using the existing electrical network saves on investments in additional telecommunications infrastructure. Easily expandable
    High data transmission speeds enable the further implementation of additional applications, such as substation monitoring, SCADA systems, power grid load management, and electromobility (operating electric vehicles).   []
